Whirlpool currently employees about 68,000 employees and manages 66 locations worldwide used for manufacturing and technology research. They are committed to producing appliances that help conserve energy and water, and making the lives of their owners just a little bit easier.

Whirlpool History

In the early 1900’s, before Whirlpool Corporation came to be, a man by the name of Lou Upton began an endeavor to manufacture household appliances. When his hopes for the enterprise did not come to fruition, he took his patents to his uncle Emory and brother Fred, forming the Upton Machine Company.

As requests for Upton’s motor powered wringer washer increased over the years, the company decided to merge with Nineteen Hundred Washer Company of New York, forming the Nineteen Hundred Corporation in 1929. After a period of little production during World War II, the company experienced explosive growth in 1945. By 1949, the company had managed to reach $48 million in sales and $3 million in profit. At this time, they changed their name for the final time to Whirlpool Corporation to increase brand recognition.

By the 1970’s, Whirlpool Corporation was offering appliances to handle not only laundry, but also home heating and cooling, food preservation, consumption, and cleanup in the kitchen. Their focus became social and environmental responsibility of their products. Since its acquisition of Maytag Corporation in 2006, Whirlpool Corporation has grown to become the largest appliance retailer in the world.

Whirlpool Appliance Repair

While Whirlpool Corporation prides themselves in their innovative product lines, their appliances are not without their share of common problems. One repetitive complaint on the Whirlpool ranges seems to be the lifespan of the oven. Many customers have voiced their complaints regarding costly repairs that have arisen right outside of the warranty period. Some of these common complaints include overheating, igniters that have stopped working, and unclear instructions on the self-cleaning feature.

Whirlpool washing machines seem to have some issues revolving around the replacement of parts while the unit was within one to two years of age and instances of rust appearing in the same time frame. Customer complaints on other products appear to be more like isolated incidents. However, it seems most customers who’ve experienced issues have also not had a pleasant experience with Whirlpool Corporation customer service, in particular with technicians who they’ve spoken with over the phone, or had come into their home.

With this said, it is always best to research a product before moving forward with a big purchase. It seems only a handful of Whirlpool models have had consistent issues, and it may best to steer clear of those models. Also, Whirlpool offers extended warranties on all of their products. With the cost of repairmen and parts a warranty is the best way to protect yourself when purchasing from Whirlpool or any other manufacturer.

Fixing Whirlpool Appliances

While some Whirlpool appliance issues may require working with a technician, going through the warranty or replacing parts, some common problems can be quickly resolved on your own. With the high efficiency washing machines comes the need for HE laundry detergent. Using regular detergent can cause problems with the machines ability to function. This seems to be a common repair solutions and switching to the proper detergent resolves it.

Another common complaint that is easily repairable is water leaking from the freezer into the refrigerator component on the Whirlpool top freezer refrigerator. The problem seems to be the result of a clogged drain and is easily fixed by melting the ice that is blocking the drain. For other such tips and tricks Whirlpool’s website offers a tool on their website that allows customers to diagnose frequently occurring problems and fix them if possible – without requiring a technician to come out to one’s home.
